This has been a successful last few months for me when it comes to music discovery. Sometimes I feel like I’m replaying the same 3 songs over and over again until they’re irrevocably glued to my psyche… but not lately! I’ve been finding so many songs I like and going on long walks to listen to them. Now that I’m able to drive my car around again I can turn the radio up really loud and use my speakers to their full potential, much to the dismay of my eardrums. I wanted to make a little playlist here and write why I like each song, just so I can look back later and remember the specifics. These are in no particular order, just random~
- Your Love is Killing Me-Sharon Van Etten
- This song feels scream-able and amazing. The lyrics paint a violent picture that uses imagery in the perfect way. I also like the album cover and I do judge books by their covers.
- Long Flight-Future Islands
- I’ve liked this song for a few years, but I rediscovered it lately and have been playing it a lot more. It really does sound like a long flight. And the lyrics make me want to run away.
- You Just Have to Be Crazy
- This song is just cute and kind of feels like a warm hug (the whole album does). I like that he compares the girl he’s singing about to a slice of chocolate cake.
- Outside-The Weeknd
- I love Trilogy. The instrumentals in this song are pretty unique and it feels dark and dramatic. I wish The Weeknd still made music that sounded like this.
- Fineshrine-Purity Ring
- I love the intro of this song. It’s addictive. She compares her body to cliffs, lakes, quarries. It just sounds cool.
- Good Good Things-Descendents
- This song feels happy, like summer. I played it for my friends, and they liked it too. It feels positive and is the type of song I’d want to play walking to the farmer’s market on a sunny morning.
- The New-Interpol
- Ughhhhh where can I even start with Interpol! I saw them live last week and I think my feet lifted off the ground…I floated. The New is one of my favorites. “I wish I could live free; I hope it’s not beyond me.”
- Carrion-Fiona Apple
- I like how this song switches around. It kind of feels like two songs in one. And if Fiona Apple is singing it, I think it’s impossible for me to dislike it. She’s sort of like Shakespeare if you think about it.
- Are You Sure You’re Really Busy?-Blood Orange
- Amazing amazing amazing. The guitar from 2:14-4:01 specifically. Like how. Devonte Hynes is a genius. I also like the lyrics of this song a lot.
- Rest My Chemistry-Interpol
- Another Interpol song of course. This song feels like lying in bed after a really stressful night. There’s something satisfying about it. Hearing it live was even better. I need Paul Banks to follow me around and tell me how to live my life to be honest.
- Nothing But Trouble-Phantogram
- I could put like 8 more Phantogram songs on this list, but I’ve been listening to this one the most lately. They also reference another song of theirs (Shotgun Smiles) in this one and it feels like a secret that only I know. “Don’t listen to me, I’m nothing but trouble, I’m losing my mind.” Yes!
